Zimbabweian footballer Divine Lunga survives gun attack in Johannesburg

Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga was hit by an unknown gunman in Johannesburg but survived. The 31‑year‑old was driving in the inner‑city Hillbrow suburb on Sunday when his car was shot at.

The man, who plays for Zimbabwe’s national side and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, escaped unharmed. Police spokesman Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said they are investigating a case of attempted murder but no arrests have yet been made.

The incident illustrates the serious crime problem in South Africa, where the country has one of the world’s highest murder rates. According to the Citizen, Lunga and his younger brother were heading to church when the suspect opened fire on their car, mistaking them for undercover police.

The shooting happened in Hillbrow, a neighbourhood already noted for high crime. Authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant while the investigation proceeds.
