Central Texas is grappling with devastating floods that have killed a third victim, bringing a bitter reminder of last year’s July disaster.
The influx of rain over the past days caused the Guadalupe River to rise sharply. Within a four‑hour span the water level jumped 32 feet, cutting off routes and flooding homes in Uvalde, Kerr and Kendall counties.
Governor’s Update
Texas Governor Greg Abbott released an update on X, stating that one person had been killed and about 80 people were rescued. He added that the flooding would continue to rise throughout the day and urged anyone in the area to seek higher ground.
National Weather Service Warning
The agency has issued continuous alerts, warning residents that the river is “rapidly rising” and calling it a catastrophic flood event. It has advised “move to higher ground now.”
The 2023 Tragedy Revisited
Last July, the same stretch of the Guadalupe River swept the towns of Uvalde and surrounding areas, killing more than 130 people. The incident was most tragic at Camp Mystic, an all‑girls Christian camp near Kerrville, where 25 children and two counselors were swept away and lost.
Camp Mystic chose not to reopen sites this year and filed for bankruptcy following the devastation.
Emergency officials are calling for continued evacuations as the river’s waters surge. Residents are advised to heed warnings, stay away from low‑lying areas, and monitor updates from local authorities.
