MINNEAPOLIS (RTWNews) — Minnesota officials, including Ramsey County Attorney John Choi and Sheriff Bob Fletcher, have announced the initiation of an investigation into the conduct of federal law enforcement officers in Ramsey County. This probe will potentially examine serious allegations such as kidnapping, burglary, and false imprisonment linked to past federal law enforcement activities.
The investigation was revealed during a statement made by Choi and Fletcher, who plan to provide further details during a forthcoming news conference. In addition to addressing local concerns, they specified an intent to seek crucial information from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has previously declined to assist with inquiries into incidents involving federal officer-involved shootings that resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens.
While the announcement did not delineate specific incidents being targeted, the officials are prepared to collect information from the public regarding these allegations and potentially others as the probe unfolds. This recent move comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by Hennepin County, encompassing Minneapolis, aiming for access to evidence necessary for the independent investigation into three previous federal officer-involved shootings, including those of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Choi and Fletcher voiced concerns over a supposed lack of cooperation from federal authorities, particularly in connection to the surge of around 3,000 federal enforcement officers in Minnesota. Moreover, the historical context of the Trump administration's immigration policy leads local officials to assert a need for independent inquiries due to a mistrust of the federal government’s oversight.
The Justice Department has indicated that it is pursuing a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death and has announced that two involved officers were placed on leave; however, it has deemed a similar investigation unwarranted for Good’s fatality.
