France has opened disciplinary proceedings against its top diplomat in the Central African Republic (CAR) over accusations of misconduct.
Allegations surfaced after a French weekly reported that Ambassador Bruno Foucher allegedly brought dozens of women into his official residence in Bangui and engaged in sexual relations with some of them.
Sources indicate that the alleged incidents took place between January and March 2024. Security concerns were raised as a number of the women reportedly stayed overnight at the residence.
France’s foreign ministry has since launched investigations into a possible security breach and is conducting administrative disciplinary procedures, officials said the process is still underway.
Foucher, 65, began serving as France’s ambassador to Bangui in 2023, just as France and CAR have been working to strengthen their diplomatic ties after a period of strained relations.
During a March visit, French Foreign Minister Jean‑Noël Barrot praised the “complete restoration of relations” between the two countries.
